BUTTERCUP BILL

dreams are dangerous

Drama / Romance

BUTTERCUP BILL is the psychosexual romance of Patrick and Pernilla mutually obsessed soul mates clinging to childhood secrets. Closer to twins separated at birth than friends or lovers, they express love through sexual games of jealousy and subversion and seek escape from a reality they believe has no place for them.

The film begins with Pernilla, dealing with the suicide of Flora – the pair’s childhood playmate. Although estranged for years, Pernilla yearns for Patrick while struggling alone in the city. One night, she receives a disturbing vision of a little cowboy, named Buttercup Bill, the pair’s childhood imaginary friend. Bill packs her suitcase and magically transports her to an isolated phone booth deep in the South, on the doorstep of her lost love.

Reuniting rekindles their dynamic of childlike abandon and deviance. In a volatile, idiosyncratic relationship of forgetting, they sink into sinister, whiskey soaked, schoolyard fantasies. Unwitting friends become pawns in a poisonous game oscillating between fairytale innocence and sadomasochistic invocations of their past. Love and cruelty are one in this haze of obsession.
